Sorare — Season 2: Interview with CEO, Nicolas Julia — Tournament & Prize Plans Outlined!
Ahead of the first international break of the season, I took the opportunity to interview Sorare CEO, Nicolas Julia in order to learn what their gamers should expect to see next with regards to Tournaments and Prizes.

YNWA — “Hi Nicolas, thank you for the opportunity to spend time with you today. There is a lot of excitement amongst the users about the new players we’ve yet to see auctioned off (due to the transfer window only just closing)
The most popular question I’ve been asked to put to you today is — which teams and leagues we can expect to see introduced to the game next?!”
Nicolas — “It is clear that we started Sorare to bring football fans the most comprehensive experience regarding licensed teams. We aim at announcing the majority of the main teams in the near future.
Regarding the coming weeks, we have signed a number of Leagues and Clubs that we’ll announce shortly. We can safely say that over 40 teams will be announced by the end of the year.”
YNWA — “With new teams and leagues, is it safe to assume this will in-turn increase the amount of weekly prizes that can be won?”
Nicolas — “Absolutely! At the moment, our 3 Primary Tournaments carry a prize fund of 1 ETH per week and approximately 1.5 ETH of value in the player cards we award. This season we have increased the overall number of winners by paying out the top 5 in our All-Star Leaderboard and the top 4 now in both the Super Rare and Rare Leaderboards and this will expand further as more users join.
We are in the final stages of preparing new Tournaments designed specifically for New and Existing users and as certain volume thresholds are met, the overall weekly prize pool will continue to grow.”
YNWA — “Great. So from a New Users point of view, how would that work?”
Nicolas — “Starting in October, we will have a permanent ‘New Starters Tournament’ which will give anyone that’s just signed up, the opportunity to win prizes in their first week of playing. The eligibility for this Tournament will be that your account needs to be under 30 days old to enter.”
YNWA — “Understood — so, we’ll be crowning a lot more new winners in October then?!”
Nicolas — “Correct! We want it to be possible for someone to set up an account, buy a Pack from the Transfer Market and be competing in a matter of minutes.
Moving forward, the 30 day eligibility means that new starters would be competing with other users that have a maximum of a 4 week headstart on their collections, however, this cycle would also work in their favour when they are in their 4th Game Week.”
YNWA — “And for the existing users? I know there has been talk of introducing Leaderboards for specific nationalities or age groups. Have you decided the criteria for the next SO5 Tournament?
Nicolas — “Yes, we have. Our plan is to roll this out after we exceed the next threshold of weekly composed teams. We don’t have an exact date but we don’t see this being far off now with the New Starter Tournament expected to push us above the threshold pretty quickly.”
YNWA — “Makes complete sense. Then, last question if I may? There are a growing amount of existing users now that would be keen to spread the word on Sorare and invite friends and colleagues to join the platform. Are there plans for a referral incentive that could potentially help kick-start the ‘New Starters Tournament’?
Nicolas — “100%. As you know we’ve always valued input and feedback during the beta testing period of this game and we’d love nothing more than our existing users to help us attract more gamers to play Sorare.
We have a plan to introduce a referral programme to coincide with the New Starters launch, however, as always, we will continue to show our appreciation to everyone that supports our common goal of promoting Sorare to others. So, don’t feel you have to wait until October!”
